“I never imagined that one camp could change my life,” says 17-year-old Dunay Zakirli from Baku, Azerbaijan. “During the Girls for Climate Action camp, I learned so much about the critical role women play in addressing climate change and how we can be part of the solution.” This transformative experience, organized by UNFPA Azerbaijan in October 2024, marked the beginning of Dunay’s remarkable journey in climate advocacy.

The camp was more than just a learning opportunity for Dunay – it was a call to action. Surrounded by peers who shared her concerns for the planet, she explored the intersection of gender equality and climate action, uncovering the power of collective effort. Dunay’s passion and commitment stood out, leading to her selection as a volunteer for the UNFPA country office at COP29, the UN’s global climate change conference. Conveniently hosted in Baku from November 11-22, 2024, the event became a turning point in her young life.

A Young Changemaker on the Global Stage

“As a volunteer, I felt a deep sense of honor and responsibility,” Dunay recalls. “COP29 was not just a conference – it was a convergence of global leaders, changemakers, and dreamers united to confront the climate crisis.” For two weeks, Dunay immersed herself in the event’s dynamic environment, participating in pavilion meetings, and engaging with participants from around the world.

Her experience was nothing short of transformative. “It felt like traveling across different worlds,” she says. “The ideas, innovations, and solutions I encountered were so inspiring. Two weeks flew by so quickly that I didn’t even notice how much I had grown – personally and professionally.”

Dunay’s time at COP29 sharpened her communication skills and deepened her understanding of global climate dynamics. Interacting with experts and advocates from diverse backgrounds gave her a broader perspective and reaffirmed her belief in the power of youth-driven change.

From Inspiration to Action

Dunay’s journey from a youth camp participant to a voice in the global climate arena is a powerful example of how meaningful opportunities can empower young people. Reflecting on her experiences, she shares, “The Girls for Climate Action camp taught me to believe in myself and my ability to make a difference. At COP29, I realized that young voices, especially those of women, are essential in shaping solutions for a sustainable future.”

But Dunay’s story doesn’t end with COP29. She is determined to continue her advocacy and inspire other young women in Azerbaijan to join the fight against climate change. “My goal is to empower girls to see their potential and to break barriers. We need more young women leading the charge for climate action,” she says.
